Lead From the Server Room: Founder Lessons From 20 Years in African ICT

Uptime taught me more about leadership than any book. What a 99.99% SLA demands of a team, it also demands of a founder.

Damian Michael founded Innovo Networks in Cape Town and has spent more than twenty years in ICT across the public and private sector. The company's proprietary Video PBX platform has held 99.99% uptime on Huawei Cloud for over eight years. People ask what the secret is. The honest answer: uptime is a leadership metric wearing an engineering costume.

What four nines actually measures

99.99% allows roughly 52 minutes of downtime a year. You do not achieve that with heroics — heroics are what failure looks like in its final stage. You achieve it with a team that surfaces bad news in minutes, procedures that assume humans get tired, and a culture where the person who reports the fault is thanked, not blamed. Every outage post-mortem I have ever sat in eventually finds a moment where somebody knew something and stayed quiet. Leadership is the removal of the reasons to stay quiet.

Uptime is a leadership metric wearing an engineering costume. Heroics are what failure looks like in its final stage.

Three rules I run the company on

  • Bad news travels first class. Revenue can wait an hour; a fault report cannot. The escalation path must be faster than the excuse path.
  • Mentorship is capacity planning. Every senior engineer who cannot be replaced is a single point of failure I created. Growing people is redundancy engineering.
  • Say no to growth that breaks the promise. We have declined deals that would have compromised the SLA. The clients who stayed a decade stayed because of the deals we refused.

The founder's job description

In year one you are the product. In year five you are the process. In year ten, if you have done it right, you are the culture — and the business runs on promises kept without you in the room. That is the quiet ambition behind everything we build at Innovo: networks that hold, teams that tell the truth fast, and a company where the SLA is simply what keeping your word looks like, measured to four decimal places.
